How are you supposed to read the room when there’s no one in it? Don’t panic. Adjust your dials – tune into other signals beyond the visual by listening differently. Colleagues and clients alike marvel at your ability to read their minds. That is one of the reasons you became a professional certified coach! Suddenly, after years of being the master of the room, you are sitting in a room – alone – about to have a meeting with one or more professionals – virtually. Isolated from the signals you’ve tapped into for years, you are a foreigner in your own conference room. You are now part of the virtual work world – you are an anywhere worker. Listening Differently. Turn up the volume – not literally, but rather your sensitivity to the sounds you hear. You can think faster than the person on the other end can speak. But instead of listening more deeply, your mind wonders to other things – you multi-task – or you start to think about what you are going to say in response. STOP! Tap into that mental power to listen differently – more deeply – observe more. Listen to the Words. Especially to the choice of words the speaker uses. But don’t stop there. Observe their breathing; tone of voice; the pace at which they speak; the pitch and changes in pitch, the pauses they take; and the silence. All of these can help you understand the speaker’s frame of mind – which you usually ...

Wow, we’re beaming with pride! We are so glad you are enjoying the First Coaching Research Quarterly - first in a series of quarterly publications featuring the research work of graduates of our global coach certification program. Coaching: Trends and Thoughts (Issue 01, Feb 2012) is an online, magazine-formatted journal exploring such coaching topics as Baby Boomer Women Embrace Life Coaching and Choice Theory in Coaching. Here’s the praise Les White, one of our students, showered on us! “This is absolutely fantastic and timely. It does not really matter if someone can pick small holes in the methodology or find some rigour lacking or the coach researcher drawing unwarranted conclusions from the ‘evidence.’ It only serves to get discussion going and to refine the research. After all it is not PhD research! The format is great and the ability to save the pdf and not have to pay for receiving it [yet:)] is also fantastic. Thanks heaps! – Les White All ICA students complete a research paper as part of their Certified Professional Coach program. The diversity of thought captured in these research papers is a result of tICAs emphasis on self-directed learning and a coach-approach teaching style. Our graduates are extraordinary people from all walks of life. These research papers are just one of the many opportunities they have in our coach training program to draw on their life experiences as well as their interest and passion for the coaching and create a unique perspective and capture that for all the world to share. Feel free to share it ...

Man should not try to avoid stress any more than he would shun food, love or exercise. -Hans Selye How would you feel if I told you that all of the stress you feel in your daily worklife is a gift? You would probably roll your eyes, mumble some colorful explainatives and walk away. But wait! What if I told you that if you accept the gift, you may not have to experience that particular stressor again? Stress Defined Stress has several meanings: a) to put emphasis on; b) the physical pressure, pull or other force exerted on one thing by another put another way c) a physiologic reaction by an organism to an uncomfortable or unfamiliar physical or psychological stimulus. Biological changes result from stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, including a heightened state of alertness, anxiety, increased heart rate, and sweating. Mash these meanings together and simplify the language and you get: Stress – a reaction to something uncomfortable that needs my attention So if I pay attention to it – in the right way – I can relieve the stress? Yes! You see, if you didn’t pay attention to it you would not be able to reduce the uncomfortable stress and it would continue to nag at you creating work-life angst (as well as negative health issues over time.) Therefore experiencing stress helps us to recognize something that needs our attention and is therefore a gift. Turn Stress into Insight So how do I eliminate stress? How do ...
