March: Cross Cultural Coaching with Valerie Bath

Valerie Bath Cross Cultural Coaching Group leader discusses a number of topics of specific interest to cross cultural coaching.
The first topic was around the different motivations someone might have depending on their cultural background. For clues as to what might motivate a person one can look at whether the person comes from an individualistic culture or from a more group based culture. Generally people are either motivated by money or by loyalty or wanting to please other people.
The second topic discussed was around cross-cultural competencies. What are some of the competencies that people will need to develop to be successful in multi-national business or living situations or interactions with people from a different culture?
One cross-cultural competency would be the ability to give appropriate feedback. In some cultures parents are quite strict and don’t give their children much positive feedback whereas other cultures praise a lot. The same goes for a work environment.
